Meet on the Lower Level of Harvard Art Museums, 32 Quincy Street, Cambridge
Experience the world-class collections of the Harvard Art Museums in a private tour designed especially for members of H4A! The Harvard Art Museums, stunningly renovated in 2013-2014, comprises what we once knew as the Fogg Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum. Its Asian art collection includes works from East Asia, South and Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Western Asia, ranging from folding screens and scroll paintings to prints, ceramics, sculpture, metalwork, lacquers and textiles that span more than 7,000 years, from Neolithic times to the present. Our exciting tour will take us from the magnificent Calderwood courtyard through key highlights—including the renowned collection of ancient Chinese bronze vessels and jade objects. Soyoung Lee, the new Chief Curator of Harvard Art Museums, will greet the group and provide an introduction. This episode's featured guest is novelist Sharmila Sen AB '92, an Executive Editor-at-Large at Harvard University Press and former Harvard professor, whose new book, Not Quite Not White: Losing and Finding Race in America, tells about her search for identity after emigrating from India to the U.S. when she was 12. “I got race the way people get chicken pox," she writes. "I also got race as one gets a pair of shoes or a cell phone. It was something new, something to be tried on for size, something to be used to communicate with others. As a testament to the importance of Asian American Studies, a Harvard Asian American Studies seminar in 2014, taught by visiting professor Christine Yano, inspired its students to stay together afterward as a writing collective. They eventually produced a book, Straight A's: Asian American College Students in Their Own Words, edited by Professor Yano and Neal Adolph Akatsuka AM ’13, GSA '16, ALM '18, which was published this summer. Professor Yano and Alumni contributors Franklin Odo AM '63, Amy Chyao AB '16 HLS '19, Lee Ann Song AB '15 and Joan Zhang AB '17, will be on hand to sign copies of the book available for purchase during the evening reception. We will also shine a spotlight on Asian American Studies at Harvard, for which students and faculty have been advocating for more than 40 years. We will recognize those alumni who found a spark at Harvard that led them to become Asian American Studies scholars and are now teaching at other institutions. Why does a “well-liked, passionate and brilliant Harvard sophomore” end his own life? Looking for Luke attempts to answer that question by exploring the repercussions of Luke’s final actions. The screening will serve as the catalyst for a frank discussion about the epidemic of depression and suicide that disproportionately affects Asian-American youth. The session will share perspectives as well as explore avenues for prevention and treatment, in an effort to shed light, reduce stigma and raise awareness of these serious diseases. The documentary contains serious and emotionally fraught situations that may not be suitable for younger viewers. Our Summit takes place at perhaps the most intense moment of a heated debate around affirmative action that is centered on Asian Americans and how Asian Americans are treated by Harvard. Our expert panelists bring varied and nuanced views of race-conscious practices and whether or not they are beneficial to Asian Americans, to higher education and to society at large. They will outline the history of Asian Americans and affirmative action, provide insight into the current lawsuit and explore whether there are better ways to admit a college class.
